"Contentment through God"
1 Timothy 6:6, “Godliness with contentment is great gain.”
According to George MacDonald, who was a pastor of a church back in 1850 and is the author of my devotions book, he said “To every person on earth, I say, if you are not content, it is because God is not with you as you need Him, not with you as He would be with you, as you must have Him. You need Him as your body never needed food or air, need Him as your soul never hungered after joy, peace, or pleasure.”
Contentment is so difficult to attain in our day and age because of the kind of life we are living, plus all the technologies and distractions in our lives. We have been disillusioned by influences from the media, peers and etc. Everything else but God came first. It is because God was not first in our lives that we had to suffer with so many frustrations.
Everything in our lives, whether it’s responsibilities, Facebook, or Playstation, is just an illusion which cheats us into thinking that we have no time for God. On the contrary, we ALWAYS have time for God. It’s just whether you are willing to make time for Him.
During my missions trip in Batam, there was no technology, no internet. Electricity is turned on every day at around 6pm, so that the lights and fans can be turned on. After which, the electricity will be turned off at 11pm sharp. That was when I had all the time in the world to spend with God, meditating on his words and reflecting on whether I had obeyed His commands. On top of that, I could pray without any distractions.
True and eternal contentment only come from God because God knows what is best for you and He promises to answer your prayers. In John 16:24, Jesus said “Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.” You will get your wish only when God knows it’s the right time. In Jeremiah 29:11, God told Jeremiah “For I know the plans I have for you. Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
I was watching a horror movie on HBO with my sister. It’s called The Unborn. It was REALLY freaky and scary. But at the exorcism scene, they were reading from Psalms 91. That was when it impacted me and it touched my heart.
Psalms 91: “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress my God, in whom I trust.’ Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his feathers and under his wings you will find refuge… You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day.... A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. You will only observe with your eyes and see the punishment of the wicked. If you make the Most High your dwelling… then no harm will befall you… ‘Because he loves me’, says the Lord, ‘I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name…”
You’ll need to read the chapter yourself because it’s rather long, but this chapter was rather inspiring to me and it reaffirms my faith in God. Nothing else is as comforting as the Lord Himself.

2 Corinthians 12:9-10, "'My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore, I will boast all the more about my weakness, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong."
Phillipians 4:6-7, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
